With faculty drawn from programs as varied as computer science and psychology to philosophy and fine arts, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a true paradigm of what an interdisciplinary program ought to be.
Working together in small groups (see illustrations ), students bridge the gap between practice and theory as they tackle real world problems.
Students who register at the MHCI program through ICTI take classes at Carnegie Mellon’s HCII and at the Madeira-ITI (Universidade da Madeira) and complete a master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction over a 16-month period.
In this time, students complete ten traditional semester-long classes along with also a team-oriented, real-world studio project spread out between a semester at Carnegie Mellon and two in Portugal.
By taking a massive assortment of course, students obtain a broad background in computer science, human behaviour, design as well as evaluation and assessment. Additionally, students may elect to take more advanced courses to deepen their understanding in a more specific place.
Why study HCI?
The Human-Computer Interaction experts program prepares pupils to take part in the design and implementation of software systems which can be utilized easily, efficiently and enjoyably. Having a masters in HCI, pupils are prepared to contribute to the multi-disciplinary teams which typically construct software programs. Students learn strategies for constructing powerful user interfaces, design fundamentals which make user interfaces visually clear and attractive, employ techniques for identifying requirements for software and its achievement, and gain knowledge about the organizations and people that can use their systems.
Since human-computer interaction studies machines and humans in conjunction together, the HCI program brings its encouraging knowledge from both fields. Combining methods in computer graphics, operating systems, programming languages and development environments with communication concept, graphic and industrial design, linguistics, social sciences, cognitive psychology and human performance, technology and the humanities complement one another as they redefine both of their various fields in a new partnership.
Students admitted to the HCI application have to have a strong undergraduate degree or comparable work experience in computer science, a behavioural science (psychology, sociology, anthropology, or organizational behaviour ), or visual or data design. Pupils are expected to have had at least one class in statistics, layout, and programming prior to entrance into the program.
